On Friday, 29 September 2023, a Bagmati Provincial Assembly Member, Mr. Surendra Raj Gosai, presented the Impact of Colonization in South Asia at a program organized by Khwopa College of Law.
In his presentation, he discussed how Nepal has been affected by colonization and neocolonialism. He noted that Nepal was never directly colonized by a European power, but it was still influenced by British colonialism in India. He also discussed how neocolonialism has affected Nepal, which is the indirect control of a country by another country through economic and political means. The Provincial Assembly Member spoke about the negative impacts of colonization and neocolonialism on Nepal. He noted that colonization and neocolonialism have led to the exploitation of Nepal's natural resources, the suppression of Nepali culture, and the creation of new social divisions. He also discussed how neocolonialism prevents Nepal from achieving true independence and self-determination. He added that the Rana regime is also a form of indirect colonialism that hindered Nepal for more than. a century.
Mr. Gosai also spoke about how Nepal can overcome the challenges of colonization and neocolonialism. He called for Nepal to invest in its economy and infrastructure, promote Nepali culture and values, and develop strong and independent institutions. During his presentation, he encouraged students to study different books related to the given subject matter.
